SAFETY

The Tideway is a fantastic place to row, with some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets ever seen. Being a tidal river, the water rises and falls with the tide, which can make it challenging to say the least. With the water changing constantly, both fixed and moving obstacles appearing and disappearing with the tide, as well as a variety of other river users, including passenger vessels and private boats using the river, it's important that we prioritise the safety of us, our crews and other river users. The PLA provide all Tideway users with a set of rules and regulations (much like a driving test) that all the clubs on the river use to sign off rowers and coxes so that they can safely navigate this tricky stretch of the river. Learning the Tideway navigation, even if you are a part of a larger crew, is important as your safety and that of other river usesrs is paramount.

To find out more about Tideway navigation, or if you need to report an incident or near miss whilst rowing or have a chat to our Safety Advisor, please follow the link below.

LEARN 2 ROW

Every year we run a learn to row course to get those interested in the sport, in a boat and involved in the club, giving them a taster of what rowing as part of a team, can be like.

Run by a professional coach, supported by experienced club members, the course is held over 6 weeks in the summer. The 2019 Course will be held on Wednesday's 1900-2100 and Sunday's 1100-1300, commencing Wednesday 17th July through to Sunday 25th August (12 sessions). The cost of the course is £150.

There's no need to have rowed before, but you must be physically fit and able to swim. On the course, you will gain an introduction to rowing, either as a rower or a cox, welcomed into the club, socialising with all the members over the duration of the course. On the course, we look at a mixture of sculling (two oars) and sweeping (one oar) how to use a rowing machine (known as an ergo) correctly.

This year we are holding our Club Summer Party on Saturday 31st August. The day will commence with "fun races", to which all Course attendees will be invited, followed by a BBQ. It is also a good chance to chat to the current members to see if it is possible to take up rowing as a sport and what it takes to join our development squad in the new rowing year.

Contact us at enquiries@sonsrowing.com to express your interest and find out more.
